Anybody who has
taken part in a 10week Beginners Course can be part of a Follow-on
Group.
Any follow-on
course is an opportunity to deepen your relationship with your writing,
expand your writing portfolio and allow your voice to mature.
The sessions
follow a similar format to the Beginners' Course but with a greater
emphasis on your developing some long-term projects, which might be
a work of fiction, a poetry collection, a series of memoirs, or a
mixture of any of these.
Time will
be given to looking at some of the technical features of creative
writing such as monologue, dialogue, characterisation and plot. However,
these more formal elements will be dealt with in an informal manner.
The focus, as always, will be on strengthening intuitive responses
rather than following textbook-formulas.
Creativity
is at the heart of every course, with on-the-spot exercises continuing
to enable the production of fresh writing, support new ideas to surface
and provide insight into the nuances of your creative process.
Writing is
often a solitary experience. For a writer, solitude can be precious
but when solitude spills into isolation it can be unproductive. The
sense of group is key to a follow-on course. The group acts as a container
for all the writing to take place and needs to provide the secure
setting within which the writer can take risks.
Every group
develops its own sense of community, where much valued writing friends
are made and where varied and sympathetic feedback can be sought.
A fresh perspective can make all the difference when we feel blocked
or a piece of writing has gotten in a tangle. The structure and regular
sessions of a course can offer impetus to the writer but it is the
group that provides the sustenance.
The special
conditions of a follow-on course are created to enable you to stretch
and spread your Writer's wings. You could find yourself developing
ideas for a wider audience, maybe for publication or performance.
Or you may discover that it is the writing process that is important
to you, as means of tapping into a source of creative material or
as a vehicle for self-reflection. Either which way, the combination
of exercises, technical input and generous group dynamics combine
to empower the writer and help them take flight.
